The Feb / March 18 Navvy News

That is the question!  From Thursday 15th February we will be making some changes to our a la carte Bargees Menu reflecting, of course, the fast approaching change of season and are pleased to introduce our ‘To (V) or Not to (V)’ section of our menu.

To offer more choice we are introducing items that can be enjoyed as either a vegetarian or non vegetarian main course dish.

Here are some examples:

An Asian style broth with noodles & vegetables:

With mushrooms & spinach wantons (V)

With free range chicken, outdoor reared pork or Atlantic prawns (NV)

Spaghetti with home made tomato sauce (V)

With beef or pork and chorizo meatballs (NV)

Alpine Tartiflette - a skiing favourite

Baked sautéed potatoes, onions, garlic & melting cheese and mushrooms served with garlic bread and salad (V)

With the above and outdoor bred bacon (NV)

Our risotto of the day is always vegetarian.

Add chicken or prawns to Not V!

Roast peppers filled with cous cous, mozzarella and tomatoes (V)

Add chicken (NV)

Plus Pie of the day in (V) and (NV)

Sausages, mash and braised red cabbage in (V) and (NV)

Our fish, chips and peas is already offered with battered halloumi cheese as a vegetarian option and will continue to be.

Menu favourites such as steaks, baked ham, belly pork, chicken, fish of the day and lamb will still be available.

Great Deals at The Navvy

Looking on the bright side, at least the media are starting to come up with good news stories rather than their usual relentless wall of doom and gloom.  However, we know that it is still tough out there, and so are pleased to be able to offer some money saving deals to help ease the strain.

Below you can see some of the fantastic offers we have to help make the pennies go a little further!  See our DINING section at the top and then SPECIAL DEALS for more information.

Fish and Chip 'Fry Day'

Join us on a Friday, lunch or evening, and enjoy home battered fish with hand cut chunky chips, peas and home made tartare sauce for just £8.50. (Or take out for £7.50)

Children's menu
We are pleased to offer a selection of child friendly dishes for children under 10, available Wednesday - Saturday lunchtimes and Tuesday - Saturday evenings between 6 and 7pm.  As with our main meals these are home made using only the best ingredients (no bought in rubbish here!)  The children's menu is priced at £5.95 (burger £7.50)
.

Gallery…

Our upper and lower bar areas sport a lovely range of art by talented local artists.  Recent additions include a series depicting The 27 Club by Flo Toller, and a set of paintings by Kirstie Edwards inspired by Belgian artist Leopold Geysen.  Flo’s sketch set, The 27 Club, feature Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain - all of whom share the unfortunate distinction of dying aged 27.  Kirstie’s mixed media paintings cover Belgium and China, including The Great Wall.  All are for sale.  We also have paintings by many other local artists.

We are keen to keep our exhibition of paintings fresh.  If as an individual or part of a group you would like to exhibit one or more paintings or would like to hold an exhibition, we would be delighted to talk to you.

The Navigation 'Shop'

We are very proud of the suppliers we use and the fantastic goods that they invest so much time and energy in producing.  We are regularly asked by customers where they can buy the produce from.  Now, we are delighted to say that we have for sale a number of items from our Display fridge in our main bar area.  These include Shropshire Cheese Company cheeses, Home Farm sausages, bacon, gammon and black pudding, Welsh Celtic Pride steaks, free range Ceiriog eggs and fresh local milk.

We hope that you will enjoy the chance to take away the produce so many of you enjoy eating in our dining room.  Do let us know your thoughts!

Fresh fish available to order and collect

The fish we use at The Navigation Inn is supplied by M&J Seafoods.  Although a national company, we use M&J because of their positive stance on sustainability, which very much fits with our own approach to the provenance of all ingredients we use.

“We are totally committed to responsible sourcing and supply of the best of the world’s catch from well-managed and sustainable fisheries. We source products within UK and International regulatory guidelines, while maintaining our commitment to actively promote greater variety and under-utilised species.”

M&J website:  www.mjseafood.com

We are delighted to now be able to offer you the chance to buy your fresh seafood from us on an order and collect basis.

Below you will find a selection of items for you to choose from, which include items currently on special offer (prices may change in future months).  Because of the popularity of this service, we are pleased to be able to extend the ordering deadline until 8pm on Thursday evenings.  Your fish will be available for collection from The Navigation Inn from 6pm on Friday evenings, or during usual opening hours over the weekend.

Where relevant we have indicated whether a fish is whole or a fillet.  Where it is a fillet we have suggested the size we will cut to and pack for you, but may be able to offer different sizes if required.  Please ask.

As well as the items listed, we will be happy to quote prices on any other specific seafood requirements you may have.  Please have a chat with us to discuss.

Book Exchange

We now have a bookcase in our main bar area with a good selection of fiction and non fiction books.  Customers are welcome to bring a book and exchange for one or to take a book home with them for a suggested donation of £1 which goes to our regular charity The Midlands Air Ambulance.  Due to the success of the Book Exchange / Purchase, we are currently short of books.  If you have any you don't need, we would be delighted to take them off your hands!

Free WiFi

You can ensure that you are never out of touch when you are at The Navvy by using our Free Wi-Fi.  Click into 'The Cloud' when you are here, whether with your laptop, tablet or phone, and after a simple first time registration you are up and running and able to stay connected any time you are with us.  You can also download a simple app (FastConnect) which will allow your device to automatically connect to The Cloud free WiFi any time you are at The Navvy or in thousands of other places around the country.  Brent can explain more (don’t waste your time asking Mark, he is still using his dumb phone!).

Just Rewards?

It is always nice to be recognised for your achievements and endeavours.

We are delighted to learn that for the fifth year running we will be in The Good Pub Guide (2016/17) as a full entry. We have seen the entry, and a very nice write up it is too!  Thanks to those customers who by their recommendations have made this possible. We have also made it into the AA Pub Guide for 2016/7 for the second time.

We are also pleased to announce that we have now achieved Gold standard in the British Hen Welfare Trust Awards.  This recognises our commitment to using only free range eggs in all of the dishes on our menu and follows on from the Silver we were awarded last year. This top award has come about mostly due to our decision to start making our own ice cream and of course double checking our suppliers of items such as mayonnaise.

Finally we are delighted to announce that our kitchen has been upgraded to the highest possible rating (5 Very Good) by Shropshire County Council as part of their Scores on the Doors scheme. It reflects the cleanliness of the food preparation areas and the work of the staff who work in them, so congratulations to all of them.

We hope to see you there.

Boating your way to The Navvy

If you are lucky enough to be coming down The Montgomery Canal by boat, then there are moorings opposite us for your convenience.  It is worth noting that if you are planning to cruise down the Canal, you will come through the locks at Welsh Frankton as you leave the Llangollen Canal.  These locks are manned, and only open between 12 and 2pm each day.  You MUST prebook by calling the Canals and Rivers Trust on 03030 404040 by 10am on the day you wish to come through the locks.  If you do not book, you will not be allowed through, even if it is a quiet day.  Once you are through the locks it is a leisurely 2 - 3 hours down to The Navvy.  Bear in mind that you will also need to book a return passage.  During the winter season (roughly November - March) please note that 48 hours notice for passing through the locks is required.
